Yoel Bitran has been a human rights and labor organizer for 15 years. Before joining GLJ-ILRF, he worked with UNITE HERE for almost a decade where he organized and unionized workers in the hotel, food service, and casino industries in Florida, Mayland, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Toronto, Virginia, and Washington D.C. There he learned from incredibly brave and mostly women, black, and migrant workers, that “Si Se Puede!” isn’t just a nice phrase if you have determination and a good plan to win. In 2020, Yoel returned to his home country of Chile, which made his Jewish Chilean parents very happy. Since then, he has been finding ways to share his experience and help develop local leaders with GLJ-ILRF partners in Chile, Peru, and Bahamas. Yoel’s natural habitat is in the ocean, the dance floor, or a large protest in the streets of Santiago.
